Right: Photograph of a common whelk Buccinum undatum by Gordon Fletcher. The whelk is common on all rocky coasts, and prefers shallow water. The animal has a full rounded shell, with a compact spire. It is characterised by the pale skin of its foot, which bears strongly contrasting dark/black mottling. |
