Fund raising events in 2006We have been involved in two very succesful fund raising events this year, raising in excess of £2000 for the Marine Conservation Society national funds: Three Peaks ChallengeCongratulations to the team, who managed the challenge - up and down Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon - in 23 hours and 30 minutes, half an hour within the limits set by the challenge. Thanks to everyone who donated, you helped raise a total of £1619.74 for national MCS funds. Beneath the waves UK style - thanksA big thank you to everyone who helped make this year's Preston conference such a great success. Feedback from the event was very positive, and £411.75 was raised for national MCS funds. Other fund raisersCapernwray Dive Centre have very kindly donated all of the money collected for the buffets they provide for our summer meetings to MCS national funds. A further fifty pounds has been raised through photographic and other exhibitions by members of the group. Loch Ryan survey 2006One of our objectives in 2006 was to try and raise the profile of survey diving, with an extended series of dive weekends in the Stranraer area. This work will offer the chance for divers and coastal wildlife watchers to put together a more complete view of marine life in an area, and develop or refine your Seasearch skills. The first survey was undertaken on the weekend of the 28th April, there were both technical problems with the boat, and health problems with some of us being too unwell to dive, but a number of surveys were completed, and have been submitted to the MCS central office. Other very successful survey dives were conducted in the Lochaline area - also in April, with a single dive site yielding more than 60 species! (Without having to resort to microscopy). ObituaryIt is with great sadness that we note the recent and sudden death of Eric Amos. With his wife Alma, he has been involved with our group since the early 1990's. Eric regularly attended our monthly meetings and was always a friendly face in the audience and a participant in pub discussions later in the evening. With his background as a mining engineer and his keen interest in geology, Eric brought a different perspective to our view of the marine environment. He gave marine geology slide talks at monthly meetings, and took the group to a number of sites revealing elements of marine geology and marine fossils. With his broad Derbyshire accent, he revealed a fascinating insight into the geological time scale of our seas and coastal environment. He often had his own unique view on a wide range of subjects adding to lively debate, where his views would be delivered with his own disarming mix of friendly down to earth practicality. He was a very warm and friendly man to many people, and will be greatly missed by the group. JANUARYWed 11th Group AGM. Lancaster Univ. Furness Lecture Theatre No 2. Plus members photo. Competition.
