Sponges are simple animals, drawing water in through small pores in their walls, where any nutrients are filtered out, and exhaling the filtered water usually through a larger opening towards the apex. They may be discrete individuals, or have a more colonial encrusting form (as here). Species are difficult to identify in the field.
